Burgundy Wine Region of France

Burgundy Wine Region

The Burgundy region lies two hundred miles East and North of Bordeaux. I covers a large sparse of land with vineyards running in a long, thin line from Auxerre in the North to Lyon in the South. A cold winter, hot summer and plenty of rain characterizes the continental climate of Burgundy.

Running from North to South, Burgundy areas are as below:

Chablis is the most northerly known exclusively for dry white wines made of Chardonnay. The wine appellation is sub-categorized as Crus and Grand Crus to define the best land parcel of the area.

Cote D'Or is a wide area below the Chablis region that encompasses several appellations within its geography.

Cote de Nuits region houses great red Burgundy wines. It shows how extra ordinary Pinot Noir can be when grown in its ideal climate. These wines are usually aged for years before they are released and are among the most expensive French wines (Gevry Chambertin). Some wines are produced here too but with much less emphasis compared to reds.

Cote du Beaune produces Chardonnay distinct from Chablis. The fruits are usually riper giving fuller, rounder wines and are generally aged in oak barrels. The best known appellation are Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Corton is the only red Grand Cru and Pommard the most widely known, both made from Pinot Noire.

Cote du Chalonnaise has many fine mid-range reds with good, strawberry flavour with an ageing period of around 5 years. Among top villages are Mercurey, Givry and Rully.

Beaujolais is a bit further South, an area on it own produces the Beaujolais appellation using the Gamay grape. It can range from light, fresh and fruity wines of Beaujolais Nouveau to the more serious wines of the villages. The quality ladder is specified using the name of the best 10 village elevated to the higher quality status.

The Maconnais is the southern end of Burgundy region. Wines are made to be drunk young with top wines coming from Pouilly-Fuisse and Sr-Veran, although the wines labelled Macon-Villages or Macon-Lugny can represent an excellent value for money.
